The LOOP methodology is an especially powerful tool for detailed career planning. By visualizing one's world of work in the next two to five years, participants can see themselves "in" their future career. Their "career" plan involves how to get there, step by step. What must be overcome to get there? What training, if any is needed? Whom does the person know who might help along the path (Step 7). What is the timeline for main benchmarks? What are the activities and tasks that must be initated first, or immediately to get one started? Even graduate students enrolled in a masters program must complete the program, secure internships, make contacts and apply for work--to pursue the job for which that degree qualifies them. In a "LOOP for career planning" workshop each person's goals and objectives are pusued individual by individual--whether the group comprises four or twenty four people. Participants work in small, four- person, self instructional groups. Coaches work with individuals one on one as well as provide instructions, guidance and consultation to the whole group over the course of the workshop. Participants end up with a (1) concrete set of personal planning tools; (2) foundation on which to base a career plan; (3) set of professional career objectives; and(4) clarity about their future career. And some even change their mind! (The full LOOP for Career Satisfaction workshop is a 12 hours and the LOOPette is 4 hours) |
